Aegon Copa Amsterdam 2014 about to start!

This weekend, another edition of the Aegon Copa Amsterdam takes place! This year is the tenth version of the international youth tournament in the Olympic Stadium, and so many interesting activities are on the programme.

Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur), Vurnon Anita (Newcastle United) and Rui Patrício (Sporting Portugal) are just a few of the names which who – after participation in the Aegon Copa Amsterdam – have made it to the European top in football. The winners of the previous editions are Panathinaikos (2005), Cruzeiro EC (2006), Ajax (2007), Cruzeiro EC (2008), AZ (2009), Chelsea (2010), Ajax (2011), Cruzeiro EC (2012) and Ajax Cape Town (2013).


The participating clubs this year are: Ajax, Ajax Cape Town (South Africa), Hamburger SV (Germany), Panathinaikos (Greece), Dalian Aerbin FC (China). Since the upcoming World Cup will be hosted in Brazil, there are also two Brazilian teams participating in the Aegon Copa 2014, namely Cruzeiro EC and Fluminense. The 8th and final team that will be cmpeting for the title will be Men United. This team was put together via an online campaigne on Facebook, where talents could subscribe themselves to become part of a special team, coached by none other than Ronald de Boer.

There are two pools in the group stage of the event, pool A consists of Ajax, Ajax Cape Town, Hamburger SV and Fluminense. Additionally, in the course of the week and during the actual event, numerous side activiteities in and around the Olympic Stadium will be organised, which are worth visiting. There is a so called ‘Sportfestival’ (with a number of free sports activities), the ‘Amsterdam Student Games’ (a football tournament for students), the ‘Amsterdam Streettennis Cup’, the ‘We own the night-run’ (10 kilometres run, hosted by Nike), the national finals of the ‘Cruyff Courts 6 vs 6’, the ‘Celebrate Rowing Tour’ (an introduction to the World of rowing), the ‘NBB Streetball Masters’ (basketball) and a ‘Sprint Challenge’.
